Photo Essay Assignment due June 30

I'll put this and further instructions on how to "turn in" this assignment, but I'm giving you this now so you can work on getting good shots for this project.

You need to compile a photo essay of your entire trip (London, Bath, and Wales included). You'll need at least 50 pictures of the trip...but I'm sure you'll want to submit more. Each shot should either tell a story in itself, or will aid in telling a story when added to a series of other shots.

You'll need to think about a beginning, middle and end of your photo essay. Your first shot should introduce your story, and the last shot should tell the viewer that the story is "over".

The pictures should have the elements of good composition that we've discussed in class. Shots should be in balance (unless you're trying to convey an idea of instability), in focus (unless you've captured an important moment), and properly exposed.

Think about framing your shots, using the rule of thirds, the lines within the shot (converging, diagonals, horizontals, and verticals), a focal point in each shot, filling the frame (i.e. no wasted space), and no distracting backgrounds if you have any portraits. Landscape photos should have straight horizons and a focal point, but the better ones will have the other elements of landscape photography that I talked about in class.

Here are some other elements I'm requiring:
1. at least 50 photos (captions are fine if you want to add them)

2. 5 shots must be creative portraits using 5 of the 10 tips I talked about in class (i.e. not pictures of four of you standing in a huddle in front of Buckingham Palace)

3. 5 other shots must be portraits or candids of locals in England (i.e. people you don't know--shop owners, bus drivers)

4. 5 of your landscape shots MUST be taken at Golden/Magic hour--just before sunrise or just before sunset

And...comment here when you've finished your 5 Pixs story due today. And keep in mind I'm not obligated to post grades--we're doing a lot of traveling, and I'm trying to get some comments to you before the next photo essay is due to help you improve. But if I don't get the grade posted on the portal, have some patience.
