Post about Improving the trip

I'd like you to post something...the next few days or perhaps when you get home:

1) what you enjoyed most about the trip
2) what you enjoyed the least
3) suggestions for next year
4) advice for next year's students about what to do, not do, what to bring, etc.

Remember your last 5 Pix or Less assignment is due today...however if you don't post it until tomorrow, that's fine. I probably won't grade them until tomorrow afternoon.

Response Essays

Remember you have a 5 Pix or Less story due Monday, May 18.

Here are ALL the response essays due this week. Mind you, the article on the portal (which you'll read for Thursday's essay) is 12 pages, so you might want to print that out asap and take it on the train with you this week. Note the time changes on the due dates.

For all the essays, you'll submit them onto your blog. The essays should be at least 250 words, and please use complete sentences and correct grammar! You'll need to read the articles and respond to some of the things in them, AND you'll also need to answer the other questions I've indicated below.

A good essay will have well-thought-out answers to my questions, using specific examples to clarify your point. A good essay will also respond to the particular points made in the articles. Merely answering my questions without referring to the articles will give you a "C" grade at best.

These essays are your subjective responses to the issues, so it's not like there's a right or wrong answer. It's mostly a matter of giving examples (or reasons) to support or clarify your responses.

Due Tuesday, May 19 at 7pm:
Read and respond to the following articles:

As Ban Lifts, Photos of Soldiers' Coffins Increase Understanding Through Visual Storytelling

Readers Balance Compassion with Privacy

What is your take on disturbing images? Do you think people should be exposed to these images in order to convey the magnitude of a world problem? Do you agree with Wally Rayl's statement: "Not being able to face reality is a major problem in our society today."

Should news organizations censor some of their images? If so, to what degree?

Due Wednesday, May 20 at 7pm:
Read and respond to the following articles:

NPPA Calls Newsweek's Martha Stewart cover a major ethical breach

Pictures May Not Lie But Doctored Photos Change History

What is wrong with changing the content of a photograph that's published in a magazine or a newspaper? Considering what readers recall from pictures, to what degree...if at all...should images be edited for a newspaper or magazine? What do you consider deceptive, and what is a legitimate editing of a picture? Use examples to clarify.

Due Thursday, May 21 at 9pm:
Read the article in the Handouts section of the portal entitled, "Revealing the Unseen: Tourism, Art and Photography".

What do you think about some of the assertions made in this article?

Aside from the fact that a class required you to take pictures on this trip, why do YOU take pictures while on a vacation? What do you usually focus on (i.e. what do you usually take pictures of) when you are traveling? Are they different from pictures you take while you are at school or home?

What do you usually do with your pictures after you've taken them? If you put them on Facebook, why do you do this?

Photo Essay Assignment due June 30

I'll put this and further instructions on how to "turn in" this assignment, but I'm giving you this now so you can work on getting good shots for this project.

You need to compile a photo essay of your entire trip (London, Bath, and Wales included). You'll need at least 50 pictures of the trip...but I'm sure you'll want to submit more. Each shot should either tell a story in itself, or will aid in telling a story when added to a series of other shots.

You'll need to think about a beginning, middle and end of your photo essay. Your first shot should introduce your story, and the last shot should tell the viewer that the story is "over".

The pictures should have the elements of good composition that we've discussed in class. Shots should be in balance (unless you're trying to convey an idea of instability), in focus (unless you've captured an important moment), and properly exposed.

Think about framing your shots, using the rule of thirds, the lines within the shot (converging, diagonals, horizontals, and verticals), a focal point in each shot, filling the frame (i.e. no wasted space), and no distracting backgrounds if you have any portraits. Landscape photos should have straight horizons and a focal point, but the better ones will have the other elements of landscape photography that I talked about in class.

Here are some other elements I'm requiring:
1. at least 50 photos (captions are fine if you want to add them)

2. 5 shots must be creative portraits using 5 of the 10 tips I talked about in class (i.e. not pictures of four of you standing in a huddle in front of Buckingham Palace)

3. 5 other shots must be portraits or candids of locals in England (i.e. people you don't know--shop owners, bus drivers)

4. 5 of your landscape shots MUST be taken at Golden/Magic hour--just before sunrise or just before sunset

And...comment here when you've finished your 5 Pixs story due today. And keep in mind I'm not obligated to post grades--we're doing a lot of traveling, and I'm trying to get some comments to you before the next photo essay is due to help you improve. But if I don't get the grade posted on the portal, have some patience.

lecture power points

Some people were asking questions about good composition--one of the elements I'm looking for in your 5 Pix stories. I've uploaded my lecture notes on the FSC portal for you to review. If I've discussed it in class, I expect you to execute some of these things in both your photo essay and your 5 pix stories.

In your photo essays for my class, I expect good composition and framing, good "natural" lighting on your focal points/subjects, and plenty of candid and "posed" shots of people on the trip and people who live and work here.

I'll write out more explicit details of this for Thursday, but these are some of the things you should be "shooting" for (pun intended).

write the title of your 5 pix story due today in a comment to this entry...

Sorry for my debit mishap...

Sorry I couldn't accompany you on your town trip this afternoon. Ugh. I'm hoping you'll be able to get tons of candids of each other (as well as the townspeople) and some "mundane" pictures of the townspeople doing their jobs. We'll be able to do more of this in London as well as on our other travels.

Remember that you have your first "Tell a Story in 5 Frames or Less" due by 5pm today. I see a few of you commented that you have yours up already. Comment here with the titles of yours that's due today. For example, you can comment, "My first 5 Pix assignment is called 'Making Breakfast'."

I'll emphasize this again--I want to see good shot composition and lighting for these, unless your picture captures a great spontaneous "moment."
